Feeding a Chihuahua Puppy: Toy-Breed Basics

Toy-breed puppies have tiny stomachs and fast metabolisms. The biggest risk in the early weeks is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) — and it's easy to prevent.

How often

• We free-feed young puppies — food available all day.
• If scheduling meals, feed 3–4 times a day.
• Never let a young Chihuahua go long stretches without eating.

What to feed

• A quality puppy-formula kibble for small/toy breeds.
• We recommend large bags of Royal Canin — about 3 months per pup.
• Fresh water always available.

Watch for low blood sugar

• Signs: wobbliness, sleepiness, glazed eyes, cold to the touch.
• Act fast: a dab of honey or Nutri-Cal on the gums, then feed.
• If it doesn't bounce back quickly, call your vet.
