Keeping a Chihuahua Warm Through a Toronto Winter

Chihuahuas are tiny, short-coated, and lose heat fast — Ontario winters are a real thing for them. A few easy habits keep your pup comfortable and safe.

Why they shiver

• Small body, high surface area = quick heat loss.
• Trembling is normal — from cold, but also excitement or nerves.
• Puppies chill faster than adults; watch them closely below 0°C.

Keep them warm

• Use a sweater or jacket for walks and cold rooms.
• Give a warm bed away from drafts and cold floors.
• Keep potty breaks short — out, go, back in.
• Dry paws and belly after snow; wipe off road salt.

When to worry

• Non-stop shivering, lethargy, or refusing food → warm them up and call your vet.
• Combine cold with low energy and it can point to low blood sugar in a toy breed.
